Brigid's
Altar
|
Altars
provide us with a place for healing and contemplation. Creating an altar
that focuses on a goddess can help us to face our challenges and provide
peace of mind each time we look at it. This altar for Brigid can be used
to celebrate, contemplate and give thanks to Brigid for the healing and
compassionate influence she still has on us.
If possible, have your altar in place before the eve of February 1st. Brigid's festival traditionally begins on the evening of January 31st. To create her altar you will need: 1 white Altar cloth (a towel, sheet or pillowcase can be substituted) 3 white candles - symbol for fire 1 large Crystal (preferably white, but clear will do) - symbol for earth Early spring flowers in a vase or glass of water - symbol for water (Wal-Mart has early spring flowers right now.) Incense - symbol of air Grains as a symbol for Brigit herself (I use Oatmeal) The items placed on your Altar are highly symbolic. As you can see, the four elements are represented on Brigid's altar, (fire, water, earth and air) giving it balance and power. White is Brigid's color as she is generally associated with her power animal, the sacred white cow. In Scotland she was invoked as "Milkmaid Bride". Imbolc (pronounced imm'ulk), means "in the belly" and also refers to the "first milk of the year". Imbolc is the name of Brigid's feast day and the spring quarter of the year. St. Brigit was often accompanied by a white cow that always gave her all the milk she needed. White is also a symbol for purity symbolizing Brigid's generous and pure heart. The early spring flowers are a symbol for the "turning of the wheel", meaning winter moving into spring. Spring flowers make a nice offering to Brigid. I used Tulips on my altar, but you can use whatever flowers you can most easily get your hands on this time of year. I have included Brigid's Cross on my altar by printing out an actual photo of one. I have included one below for you to print out and use. (Place your mouse over the photo, right click, then click on "print picture") Ideally you could create one for yourself and place it in a central area on your altar. Light the candles on your altar every day for 19 days, offering a short prayer of gratitude each time. When invoking Brigid at
your altar you could say something like: This would be a good time to meditate on what you want to give birth to in the coming year. May all of your dreams and inspirations quickly come true. May Brigid's mantle cover and protect you all ways.
